“Would?” is one of the most recognizable songs by the Seattle grunge band Alice in Chains. Written primarily by guitarist and vocalist Jerry Cantrell, the song blends heavy, sludgy bass with haunting vocal harmonies between Cantrell and frontman Layne Staley. Its slow, hypnotic groove and introspective lyrics helped define the darker, heavier edge of early-1990s grunge.
Cantrell wrote “Would?” as a tribute to his friend Andrew Wood, the lead singer of the Seattle band Mother Love Bone. Wood died in 1990 from a heroin overdose just as his band was gaining attention. Cantrell had known him personally in the Seattle music scene, and the loss affected many musicians who would soon shape the grunge movement.
The lyrics reflect Cantrell’s thoughts about judgment, addiction, and how people respond to someone struggling with self-destructive behavior. Rather than condemning Wood, the song asks listeners to consider how they themselves might act under similar circumstances. Lines like “If I would, could you?” emphasize empathy and self-reflection.
