'Exile On Main Street' turns 50 this year. So I'm covering some of my favorite songs from the greatest Stones album of them all.
This beautifully moody song is about love like a cannon ball with your name on it coming out of the blue aimed straight at your heart - you see the incoming shot but you're powerless to avoid it. A brother-in-arms sees her coming too and tries to warn you, but it's no use. You are a goner. Her friends think you're just a one night stand (maybe that's what she told them), but they don't know how vulnerable you are and that you were actually falling in love with her. You tell yourself to hide your tears and pretend this woman you hooked up with didn't really get to you. But she did get to you.
God knows you were feeling needy and she was oh so willing right when you needed her to be, but that doesn't change the basic math here: You fell for the wrong person (again). And you really should have known better. Even bad boys can get their hearts broken.
You try getting drunk to feel better, but it doesn't really help. You know this relationship is doomed, but you try to ignore that and get a little more of something that feels like love from this girl before it's all over. You try giving yourself pep talks. You try turning the lights off when you're together (As Kurt Cobain said a generation later: "With the lights out it's less dangerous"). But there's no two ways about it: You were lonely. She read you like a book. You got played. And it hurts.
The only way out is through. You've got to stop lying to yourself about how you feel. Admit that you cared - more than she did. Cry those tears. Let it loose, let it all come down.
How long does it take for love to fly you to the moon and back and then turn your life into an emotional train wreck? "Give her just about a month or two..." It's going to take longer than that to get over her, but you'll live through this. And yet... The One That Got Away took a little piece of your heart with her, and a lifetime won't be long enough for you to truly forget.

HI gang, I'm leaving today for a week off the grid in a wilderness area. I'll check in in about a week when I get back. Still holding space for all you wonderful players. Let it loose, let it all come down!
airedale Thanks David! It's a nice little embellishment. Remixed (on big screen with big Studio mode sliders) and republished.
Added the strings that appear for a couple of bars at the beginning
I like the sound of your new track, David. No sync problems. New patch sounds sweet and clear. New mix published.
Robert, I just uploaded new track with a different patch. I think it sounds much better. I moved the original track to drafts. So you need to make adjustments again.
