S.O.S - ABBA (Completed)
It's difficult for me not to wax poetical about this song. It is beautifully written, arranged, produced, and performed, and in my view is still one of the most perfect pop songs ever. Recorded for their eponymously titled 1975 album, ABBA released SOS as a single in June the same year where it rapidly climbed to No.1 in no fewer than 6 countries, and the song was the first in a line of 18 consecutive Top 10 hits for the band.
When I first heard it on radio in the 70s, even my young, uninformed ears were stunned by the arrangement. Decades later, after years of classical training, performing, composing and teaching, I'm no less enamoured. It's a superb composition with as much care and thought given to the role of each instrument as those in a Baroque concerto. My favourite part was always the D minor to F major modulation passage using arpeggios played on several overdubbed MiniMoogs and pianos. The phased/compressed piano that introduces, closes, and carries the song was also significant ear-candy.
Okay, I'll stop now!
