SPANDAU BALLET - Through The Barricades (Completed)

Registrato tra Francia e Germania, Through the Barricades ha prodotto tre singoli di successo nel Regno Unito: Fight For Ourselves (posizione 15), How Many Lies? (posizione 34) e l'ultimo successo nella top ten della band, il singolo omonimo Through the Barricades (posizione 6). Il primo singolo, Fight For Ourselves, fu presentato in anteprima in Italia molti mesi in anticipo rispetto alla pubblicazione dell'album, quando il gruppo fu ospite alla 36ª edizione del Festival di Sanremo nel febbraio 1986.
L'album è stato rimasterizzato nel 2017 con l'aggiunta di alcune bonus track oltre l'inedito strumentale Fight... The Heartache e un DVD con il documentario dell'album e i video dei vari singoli. Grande successo per gli Spandau Ballet dei fratelli Kemp e del front-man Tony Hadley, l'ultimo in realtà (con altri brani dell'album omonimo) per il gruppo inglese portabandiera del genere new-romantic negli anni '80. Ed un altro esempio di canzone di successo nel decennio del disimpegno che tratta però un argomento impegnato, come può supporre anche l'ascoltatore distratto o ignaro della lingua inlese, riflettendo sulla parola "barricade" nel titolo. Ma magari pensava a una metafora per una storia d'amore tormentata. Invece l'argomento è serio e pure attuale per l'epoca, la decennale crisi dell'Irlanda del Nord, enclave protestante in un paese cattolico ma, soprattutto, segnata da una storia che arriva da lontano e che ha cristallizzato le posizioni, rendendole insanabilmente ostili. Come ricorda il testo nella strofa. Una storia quasi risolta nel nuovo secolo, ma che peraltro torna ancora quasi 40 anni dopo con la problematica gestione della "brexit" in quella terra. Gli Spandau Ballet l'affrontano nel modo più semplice ma più efficace, adottato nelle storie sin dai tempi lontani: la scelta dell'amore impossibile ma che comunque cerca e forse alla fine riesce a superare i contrasti, attraversando le barricate che dividono due popoli o, addirittura "due vite" diverse.

The first single, Fight For Ourselves, was premiered in Italy many months before the album's release, when the group was a guest at the 36th edition of the Sanremo Festival in February 1986.
The album was remastered in 2017 with the addition of some bonus tracks as well as the unreleased instrumental Fight... The Heartache and a DVD with the album documentary and videos of the various singles. Great success for the Spandau Ballet of the Kemp brothers and front-man Tony Hadley, the last in reality (with other songs from the album of the same name) for the English group that was the standard-bearer of the new-romantic genre in the '80s. And another example of a successful song in the decade of disengagement which however deals with a serious topic, as even the distracted or unaware listener of the English language can assume, reflecting on the word "barricade" in the title. But maybe he was thinking of a metaphor for a tormented love story. Instead the topic is serious and also current for the time, the ten-year crisis of Northern Ireland, a Protestant enclave in a Catholic country but, above all, marked by a history that comes from afar and which has crystallized the positions, making them irremediably hostile. As the text reminds us in the verse. A story almost resolved in the new century, but which also returns almost 40 years later with the problematic management of "Brexit" in that land. Spandau Ballet deal with it in the simplest but most effective way, adopted in stories since ancient times: the choice of impossible love but which nevertheless seeks and perhaps in the end manages to overcome conflicts, crossing the barricades that divide two peoples or , even "two different lives".
