“If I Had a Hammer” (also known as The Hammer Song) is a 1949 American folk protest song written by Pete Seeger (music) and Lee Hays (lyrics), first recorded by The Weavers and later popularized by Peter, Paul and Mary and Trini Lopez
The song was composed in 1949 in support of the Progressive movement and the defense of Communist Party leaders charged under the Smith Act for advocating the overthrow of the U.S. government
Seeger and Hays first performed it on June 3, 1949 at St. Nicholas Arena in New York City, and later Seeger played it as a warm-up for Paul Robeson’s September 1949 Peekskill concert, which sparked the anti‑Communist Peekskill Riot
