“Just the Way You Are” is a 1977 soft rock and smooth jazz ballad by Billy Joel, released as the second single from his fifth studio album The Stranger. It became one of his most celebrated works, winning Record of the Year and Song of the Year at the 1979 Grammy Awards
Background and Inspiration
Joel wrote the song in 1976, inspired by a dream that provided the melody and chord progression.
He dedicated it to his first wife, Elizabeth Weber, whom he married in 1973 and divorced in 1982
Originally intended as a birthday gift to express unconditional love, the lyrics emphasize acceptance: “Don’t go changing to try and please me / You never let me down before”
Joel has clarified that the message is about self-acceptance, not misogyny
