It's how it was originally done, as Mike said in a short video: it's a heavily edited chord progression that Chester played on an acoustic guitar. Other than that, yeah, I spent 3 days or so trying to figure out the effect they used besides the reversing part and my best guess is an FM (frequency modulator).
