Seasons in the sun - Me first and the gimme gimmes (cover) (Completed)
The first version of the Seasons in the sun was recorded by Belgian artist Jacques Brel. Sung in a marching tempo, it tells of a man dying of a broken heart and shows him saying his last farewells.
Canadian artist Terry Jacks rewrote the lyrics, although he is uncredited for it. He justifies the rewriting by stating that he deemed the original version and its translations as "too macabre". The inspiration for the rewritten lyrics was a close friend of his who was suffering from acute leukemia and died four months later.
According to Jacks, the Beach Boys asked him to be their producer during the sessions for the band's album Surf's Up. On July 31, 1970, they attempted a rendition of the "Seasons in the Sun", but the session went badly, and the track was never finished. Jacks recorded his rendition in Vancouver in 1973 and instantly became a hit and ranked #1 in many countries.
Many artists recorded a cover of seasons in the sun including Bobby Wright, Nirvana and Me first and the gimme gimmes.
Me First and the Gimme Gimmes (often shortened to just Me First or the Gimmes) are a punk rock supergroup and cover band that formed in San Francisco in 1995. The band's lineup consists of Spike Slawson, Fat Mike, Joey Cape, and Dave Raun. Chris Shiflett is a former member.
The Gimmes work exclusively as a cover band. They specialize in rapid-fire punk interpretations of a wide range of songs, often with a humorous edge.
The band is named after a children's book of the same name by Gerald G. Jampolsky and Diane V. Cirincione.
