Paul Simon recorded the song's primary riff by tuning his acoustic guitar down a full step (tuning every string down to D-G-C-F-A-D). Playing the song in this loose tension creates a deep, booming resonance with prolonged string vibration. The heavy sustain and low-frequency overtones from this tuning can closely mimic the warm, oscillating texture of an analog synthesizer bass or pad.
